Entered by Penske Racing with factory backing, the Sunoco-liveried 911 Carrera RSR marked the model’s American endurance debut. After qualifying 12th, it completed 405 laps before retiring with engine failure. Even so, this effort became a key chapter in the 2.8 RSR program that, the same weekend, delivered the 911’s first overall victory at Daytona.
