Designed by Adrian Newey to suit that year's sweeping rule changes - narrower bodywork and grooved tyres - the MP4/13 was the class of the field from the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, where the two McLarens lapped the entire field. Coulthard's own highlight came at the San Marino Grand Prix, his only win of the year, while at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps he was caught up in a major multi-car pile-up at the start in torrential rain, before recovering to finish a well-earned 7th after the restart. The MP4/13 went on to claim nine race wins, the Constructors' Championship, and Mika Häkkinen's first Drivers' title - McLaren's best season since 1989.
